Batholith (I)

SOLD

This painting seeks to capture the ancient textures and colours of the landscape of West Penwith, inspired by their geological history of plate tectonics and the massive Cornish granite intrusions (the ‘Cornubian batholith’). Combining areas of very dark grey, brown, blue and green hues, with lighter ochres and burnt umber colours, it evokes the rocks and sea, as well as the more recent mining legacy.  Rich in texture, the work was painted in oil and pigments, with cold wax and rock powders adding body to the paint mix.   Mark-making included scratching, scraping and gouging, resulting in an aged patina.

Unframed on stretcher bars.
