This is one of a series of four paintings exploring the impacts of human activity through climate change on the stark beauty of the remote Arctic Ocean. These paintings emerged from experimenting with sea, rock and ice textures on wood panels. I wanted the scale of the landscape to be unclear, and for what was land, sky, sea and ice to be obscure. These are the realities of climate change - confusion, slowness and lack of clarity about a coordinated response. I used mixed media including foil and small pieces of collage materials to add texture, and sharp gouging tools to create fractures in the ice.
In this, the third of the series, I wanted to reinforce the confusion associated with the climate crisis, with boundaries blurring. Too many unanswered questions.
