Anthropocene (I)

SOLD

This is one of a series of four paintings exploring the impacts of human activity through climate change on the stark beauty of the remote Arctic Ocean. These paintings emerged from experimenting with sea, rock and ice textures on wood panels. I wanted the scale of the landscape to be unclear, and for what was land, sky, sea and ice to be obscure. These are the realities of climate change - confusion, slowness and lack of clarity about a coordinated response. I used mixed media including foil and small pieces of collage materials to add texture, and sharp gouging tools to create fractures in the ice.

In this, the first of the series, I wanted to create a sense of vast beauty and a big horizon, but also icebergs adrift and green land emerging.

Framed, white wood tray frame (framed size, 34 x 34 cm x 3 cm).
